Microsoft Discontinues Xbox 360 HD DVD Drive

Better keep that box in original condition…
And there we have it…The end of an era. Goodbye HD DVD, we knew ye well!
Microsoft have released an announcement stating that they will no longer be manufacturing HD DVD drives for the 360, so if you’d like to make a small fortune on ebay in 20 years’ time, stock up now. OK, so that part wasn’t actually in the announcement, but you know how these things go.
At least they’ll be providing support and warranty repairs on existing drives for the foreseeable future. I guess that as Toshiba, most of the Hollywood studios, and now Microsoft themselves have dropped support for HD DVD, we can officially call this format war over – that can only be a good thing.
So long live Video Marketplace!
And, er, dare I say it, Blu-Ray!

I guess it’s about time Sony actually got their way for once. I mean what with Betamax, Minidisc, UMD, and to a lesser extent Memory Stick, you’d think that they’d have gotten bored of coming up with unloved new technology by now.
I think he means Sony’s silly idea of selling a 256mb memory stick with DRM’d mp3′s or videos on on…
Yep, sorry. I did indeed mean their ill-fated plan to sell them with albums or whatever on. Although, to be fair, memory stick hasn’t nearly been as successful as SD and all its variants.
Also, put me down as someone who doesn’t use them. My phone takes MicroSD and my various cameras all take SD. I don’t really own any Sony stuff though so I’m probably not a very good example!
