A Fascinating Look At Portal’s GLaDOS
Author: Rees | Date: April 7, 2008There are absolutely loads of theories and interesting analyses of the story of Portal, but I found this one particularly interesting. In it, the anonymous game design type behind the excellent Game-ism blog looks at GLaDOS, Aperture Science’s insane computer and Portal’s end boss, and concludes some pretty interesting things about the game’s design.
Without wanting to give too much away, the writer puts forth a pretty compelling argument that Chell, the game’s silent protagonist, is just the latest in a long line of clones created by GLaDOS. Why? To try to do something GLaDOS can’t do herself – kill her, and free her from the torment of being trapped and alone.
There a few other interesting points, especially on how GLaDOS looks. Just read the article and see for yourself. There’s also an excellent followup which analyses the lyrics of the game’s ending song, Still Alive.
