Press Play On Tape: Geekiest Band In The World?

Author: Rees | Date: April 27, 2008

Press Play on Tape are a band from Copenhagen, and they’re on a mission: to revive the Commodore 64. Their live performances consist of covers of game music, using various instruments, but usually with a bit of a rock twist. Those Scandinavians love a bit o’ metal, after all.

So check out PPoT’s take on that incredibly annoying, but also tearfully nostalgic Bubble Bobble music – and yes, that really is a (probably drug-induced) full-on mosh going on in the crowd. The cover really picks up after a minute, and makes me wonder what a proper hardcore thrash metal version of this would sound like – probably totally sweet.

Check out their video page for more geeky goodness. Their cover of the Monkey Island theme has to be heard to be believed.

They do indeed rock! Not so sure about their selection of music though – seems to be mainly NES and SNES music, and I never had one…

Crikey. It’s only the same 30-second loop played over and over again. How interesting could it be made really?

I thought the moshing was pretty enthusiastic considering the kind of geeks who go to see a band like this probably never go out to see real bands!

Whoo.

This is likely a Viral ad (or the band itself has been hired), but I do enjoy my bubble bobble.

1. That is not a mosh.
2. Scandinavians? Metal? Lordi is probably all the Scandinavian culture you have ever experienced.

My sister lives in Finland – she’s at university there. They’re big into their heavy stuff over there, or at least it’s a lot more mainstream than it is in the UK.

See previous comment on how you really need to loosen up your definition of “mosh” when unenthusiastic, self-conscious geeks are involved..!
