Geek Cakes: Top 5 ‘It’s The Thought That Counts’ Contributions
Author: Rees | Date: October 4, 2008
We’ve featured some absolutely stunning geeky cakes here at Team Teabag, and we love every single one of them. Trouble is, they were all made by professional cakmasters (if there is such a thing) who probably spent 7 years in various educational institutions studying the fine art of cake making or something.
That’s all well and good, but we’re also big fans of DIY here at TTB, so I went hunting on Flickr for some home-made geekcakes. These are the also-rans, the runners-up, the cakes that sum up the whole “It’s the thought that counts” approach to life. And we love them all!

5: Weighted Companion Cube

This lovingly handcrafted cake was created by Flickr user wildheavenfarm. It’s instantly recognisable as Portal‘s infamous Weighted Companion Cube, and it looks pretty tasty too. Definitely a 5/5 for effort, and to quote an old cliche, this one certainly isn’t a lie!

4:Death Star

This time from a mysterious individual known as jonasale, this Star Wars inspired creation is truly a thing of beauty. Not only that, but they’re obviously going for the instructables crowd by including detailed build instructions for those willing to create their own.

3: Warthog Cake

Another creation from the maker of the Weighted Companion Cube above, only this time lovingly crafted for her husband’s birthday. As a big Halo fan myself I can wholeheartedly agree that this cake truly captures the essence of the game. While most people would agree that it isn’t a 100% faithful recreation of Master Chief’s favourite form of wheeled transport, I’m sure they wouldn’t hesitate to tuck into it anyway.

2: Tux

I’ve seen people have Tux, Linux mascot, printed onto cakes before by those cake photo printing services that you see about, but this handcrafted effort really takes the, er, cake! Hand-piped with love by litlnemo for her husband (where do guys find these cake-crafting geek women?), this one’s a personal favourite of mine. It was also created three years ago – long before the current geekcake trend took hold – so she’s truly a pioneer in her field!

1: Chocolate Dalek

A firm favourite of fans of cheesy British sci-fi everywhere, the Daleks have been terrifying small children (and some adults) since they first appeared on Doctor Who in 1963. This one features oodles of creamy icing, Licquorice Allsorts and even some Maltesers. It was created for a Doctor Who party last year by Viola Jen, and I’m pretty sure it exterminated its way into everyone’s hearts (and bellies!) in no time at all.

I’ve done a Katamari cake recently too, check it out: http://www.flickr.com/photos/26729709@N02/tags/cake/
That cake is awesome! We really love Katamari too.
Thanks for that.
