Goomba for breakfast
Author: Penge | Date: October 5, 2008Not content with owning the video games world in the late 80′s, it seems that old Ninty decided to branch out and create another product with which to rule the planet. Bizarrely, this product was… a breakfast cereal. Behold the video above and be in amazement and awe at the graphical effects and the catchy oh-so-imaginative chorus of ‘Nin-Ten-Do!’. You’d never guess that the clip was from the 1980′s, it hasn’t dated at all… ahem..
I have to admit, I genuinely had no idea Nintendo had made a breakfast cereal but apparently they did and, in a witty sort of way, they called it The Nintendo Cereal System. Good use of the word ‘System’ there you lovable Japanese crazies. According to the Wikipedia page (which is here, wiki link fans) the box was split into two halves. One half shamelessly advertised Mario and his world, with delicious sounding fruit flavoured Goombas, Super Mushrooms, Bowsers, and so on and so forth. The other half was firmly in the Zelda corner, containing berry (hmm, berries…) flavoured shields, hearts and the like.
In true Nintendo style, this cereal of high-geekery also came with some trading cards to trade with fellow Nintendonites at school and the obligatory sticker to stick on your wall only to peel off a few weeks later, taking some of the wallpaper with it which then in turn made your parents quite angry.
Given that packets are allegedly selling for $100 on the intertubes, and that Nintendo have dominated family gaming with the Wii, it’d make sound family financial sense to bring this delicious cereal back, wouldn’t it? Parents might even recognise Mario and Link. I’d certainly buy a few packets, it puts my bowl of bran flakes to shame! Come on Nintendo, do what’s right and smack the world in it’s early morning face with The Nintendo Cereal System for the 21st Century.
But if you do, make the advert a lot better. Seriously, a LOT better. We won’t mention the bit at 21 seconds into the advert. You know which bit we mean. Shame on you.
