Project VideoStar Update!
Author: Rees | Date: March 8, 2009So, here it is… My very own MAME cabinet project. You see, I came across a guy who was flogging off a load of old arcade cabs from a closed down amusement arcade in nearby Market Harborough. I bid on one, and somehow ended up with three… Anyway, that’s a story for the official VideoStar site (once I get around to it).
So, after a clean up and removal of the killer mould (of which there was rather a lot), I got to work slowly refurbishing the machine. As I suck at woodwork, the drilling of the control panel was farmed out to someone with actual skills in that department, but the assembly and wiring was done by me.
The marquee light is wired up and working, the amp is in for the speakers, the control panel is fitted, and the 19″ CRT monitor is adapted and ready for fitting. Also, the hole for the new coin mech (which is a completely different size and shape to the old one) is just about ready.
Of course, this thing’ll need a computer inside it to make it all work, so next on the agenda is setting up my old Mac Mini. After that, it’s sticking the monitor shelf in, spraying, and fitting the shiny new black t-moulding for the edges.

Ooooh looking good Mr Geekboy I have to say I like what I am seeing so far! Its ranking about a 14 out of 17 on the WIN Scale I reckon!
I look forward to getting owned by you on it in the very near future!
Yep, unfortunately your monitor had to take one for the team. It’s all for the greater good though…
Fits really nice, just need to sort the shelf out for it properly and it’ll be perfect. I managed to cobble it together roughly after I wrote this post… Check this bad boy out.
I’m just glad the monitor went to a good home instead of forever being trapped in the back of a room somewhere never to be used again!!! It must be one of the happiest CRT monitors around finally having a proper purpose again!
It’s looking all so super amazingly awesome now, with the Video Star MkII shining brightly!
Nice cab! I am thinking of using a CRT in my own cabinet for better viewing angle, but I’ve got to the find the right size, and I am not comfy with fiddling with its guts. Those things will blast the face off you if you aren’t careful!
Thanks! (You did read part 2 didn’t you!?)
I tried not to touch the guts of the CRT too much – hence it’s still pretty much in its original casing. I think that a modern CRT is the next best thing to a genuine arcade monitor for authenticity. I can understand how much of a pain it would be to mount one in a cocktail cabinet though…
