OutRun Online Arcade Drifts Onto XBLA, PSN Next Week

In my book, Sega’s 1986 arcade game Out Run is up there with the all-time greats. A game less about racing and more about cruising through the sun in your Ferrari Testarossa, pixelly hot chick by your side, without a care in the world, the game allowed the player to choose their own destiny and pick their own path to glory. Well, that was until you slammed the thing into a truck, or a rock, or a roadsign, or…
I digress.
In the meantime we’ve had the excellent sequels Turbo OutRun, OutRun: Coast 2 Coast and OutRun 2, with the most recent, OutRun 2, being the basis for the game’s latest incarnation. OutRun Online Arcade is bringing the excellent Time Attack and Heart Attack modes back, as well as the classic OutRun mode, and with shiny new car models to boot. We’re also treated to 6-player online multiplayer over 15 different courses.
The game will be an Xbox Live Arcade exclusive in North America, while it will also be released on the European PSN on Thursday 16th, at a rather reasonable £7.99 / €9.99. The global Xbox Live release is due on Wednesday 15th, at an equally thrifty 800 MS Points.
In the meantime, you can check out our uber-gallery of OutRun Online Arcade Screenshots below!
Sega have also announced that there will be a time trial competition to celebrate the game’s launch, with the quickest player to complete the game (their choice of route and vehicle) will win a trip to Maranello, the home of Ferrari.
Finally, there’s been no word yet on whether the wonderfully infectious Splash Wave will be making a comeback, but I sure as hell hope so!
