Review: Dance Party Club Hits + Dance Party Pop Hits (Wii)
Author: Tigervamp | Date: May 26, 2009This isn’t the first time I’ve reviewed a Wii title requiring a mat and it probably won’t be the last. This is very much a DDR clone but, as I mentioned in my review of Family Trainer, I don’t mind a copy as long as it’s a good one. This one is ok. This is a decent game in the “dance/party game” genre but this is where we have a problem because this particular genre happens to be the videogame equivalent of Marmite, you either love it or hate it.

You will notice that the track list for Dance Party: Pop Hits has a number of “Unknown” entries where the name of a band/singer should be. Only the first three songs in each title (in other words the well-known ones) are listed on the official site and every other site have simply copied those three. I was lucky to have the Club Hits manual which lists all of the songs on that disc but wasn’t so lucky with Pop Hits as, unless there’s a widespread misprint, I was sent a duplicate Club Hits manual in that box. This left me having to search for the rest of the artists, all I had to go on was the song title, and to be honest with you this was no easy task as some of these titles are the most ambiguous I have ever come across. I apologise for the lack of Pop Hits artists listed above but I did my best and even in a half finished state the above list is possibly the most complete you’ll find anywhere on the Internet at the moment.
The dance mat is responsive and the only problem I had while “dancing” is that on occasion I’d forget where my feet were on the mat and I’d then miss the following note because I couldn’t adjust my footing in time. There is a calorie burning mode which works pretty well and I’m sure many people will find this quite useful as playing this game is more enjoyable than a punishing session on a treadmill.
These titles aren’t going to win any awards for visuals as there isn’t much to look at other than the dance-step indicator and the basic character model independently dancing on a podium. It’s fair to say that this type of game is less about the graphics and more about the music but visually this isn’t even in the same category as a Guitar Hero or Rock Band and offers even less than the child-like models found in Wii Music.
This really isn’t my type of music but I don’t mind Push the Button, Murder on the Dancefloor, or The Creeps, and Black and Gold is a track that I actually really like. Since I’m unfamiliar with the vast majority of tracks in these games it’s hard to tell how many people will actually enjoy the music on offer. If you look at the track list and decide that you like more songs than you dislike, given that the basic game mechanics work well, you should add an extra point to my review score.
