Review: Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 (Wii)

Tiger Woods 09 on the Wii stood out from the other versions purely because of the Wii-mote and while it was fun there was a better game of golf to be had on the 360 and PS3. I expected a similar level of fun this year but it would have taken a brave person to anticipate that the Wii version of Tiger Woods 10 would be the superior version of the game. If you happen to own the three major consoles and are deciding which system to buy this for you need look no further than the Nintendo Wii.
Tiger Woods 10 makes outstanding use of the Wii-motion Plus and the accessory is a must-have in order to get the most enjoyment out of this game. Never before have we had a videogame experience of Golf which emulated the real activity so closely. Tilting the controller to the left or right on the back and down swing will result in draw or fade being applied to the shot. Those who approach this game and its learning curve with an open mind will have the best experience.
These new controls are not an easy thing to master and many players are going to feel frustrated for a while but I hope those people stick with things long enough to see physical improvements to their game. This will help to remove much of the blame-game and if you accept that your previous shot was poor because you weren’t paying enough attention to your swing and make the required adjustments you will begin to see those small improvements.
It is often the little things which can affect the overall experience in a big way and the same can be said for the new Disc Golf mode. The statement along the lines of “the craze which is sweeping America” means nothing to me and all I saw was a new mode named “Disc Golf” and wondered what the hell that was all about. At first I dismissed this mode and after a few rounds of “proper” Golf, the game which is played with a stick and a ball, I decided to give this disc thing a go. I don’t know what I was expecting but something like the Virtua Tennis mini-games was probably in the right area. I was wrong. Disc Golf isn’t a throwaway mini-game at all, you get to play through entire courses, and it actually happens to be a great deal of fun.
Disc Golf is played on a course and is a cross between Golf (no prizes for guessing that one) and Frisbee. You play each hole as you would in the regular game and have a similar goal of reaching your destination within Par but instead of a hole the aim is to throw the disc into a basket. This can be a pretty crazy experience, as anyone who has thrown a Frisbee will know, but this only adds to the fun. This shares a similar learning curve to the main game and with a bit of patience you’ll be throwing that disc with great skill. It may still end up in the trees but it’ll end up there in a highly skilled manner.
This game of Golf has been improved since Tiger Woods 09 and with the additional Disc Golf being so much fun this really is a must-have if you even have the slightest interest in the sport. Do yourself a favour, grab this game plus Wii-motion plus, and be prepared to have a lot of fun.
9/10
