Insert Coin ’09 In Pictures & Video
Author: Rees | Date: July 19, 2009In a very rare event indeed, we decided that we’d leave Team Teabag‘s secret underground HQ this weekend and venture out into the bright light of day. Thankfully we did have somewhere warm and cozy to go, as we’d been invited to Insert Coin ’09, the UK’s only coin-op expo open to the general public.
Although only in its first year, the show had everything you could expect from such an event, including a “bring and buy” sale for arcade parts, t-shirt stalls, vendors hawking MAME cabs, and of course, over 200 genuine arcade cabinets all set to Free Play and lined up ready for the playin’. Other highlights included the “Cosplay Clash” competition, Radio SEGA pumping out a good selection of classic chiptunes, competitions to win arcade machines, and DDR:UK’s mad dancing skills on show for all to see.
There was also hog roast. Mmmm, hog roast.
So, how were things? Very, very good. Of course, it’s hard to mess up when you’re essentially letting people loose on a room full of free arcade games, but the atmosphere was excellent, there were plenty of games to go around, and the organisers were on hand to help out with anything and everything if needed.
If a picture tells a thousand words, a 7:45 video at 25FPS should tell all of about 11,625,000. So instead of boring you to tears with nearly 12 million of my poorly-chosen and probably factually inaccurate words, that’s exactly what I’ve got for you just here. As a bonus, it’s set to the wonderfully retro Daft Punk stylings of Da Chip.
I think that’s probably the only video I’ve seen that features a stormtrooper on a waverunnner and someone (that’d be me) making a fool of himself on a Japanese dog walking arcade game.
Finally, here’s our photo gallery of the day’s events. As usual, click to embiggen.

Insert Coin 09 was cool. You managed to snap my brother Rario playing Street Fighter 4. He was the ginger dude with a Zangief Mohawk!
I think I did quite well on the dog walking game, considering the size of my heels!
Can I put this event down as “heel friendly”?
Just in case, you know, I feel like coming out…
Okay, I have a huge announcement to make, I’ve been keeping this a secret for so long but now I feel comfortable enough, I am…
…David Bowie.
That was a great weekend – glad I could DJ for you guys all weekend! Plenty of requests from people, texts and the web and everyone loved what FastFeet Media was playing! Very tiring but worth it, Ulala your costume looked fantastic as always and glad to help out with the cosplay music ^^ If you want more I’ll be at Summer of Sonic 2009
That looked like a lot of fun…
Does this take place yearly?
Is it worth travelling all the way down from Scotland?
Were any of the following games present:
Robocop
WWF Wrestlefest
Captain Commando
Cadillacs and Dinosaurs
*I should look at photos before asking questions…I just noticed WRESTLEFEST!!!
I didn’t actually see any of those games other than Wrestlefest. The event was great – should definitely be worth travelling down from Scotland for next year as it should be even bigger and better. This year’s was the first ever, you see.
Maybe we should do the cosplay thing next year? We could be Sonic, Tails and Knuckles!
Hmmmm, it’s interesting you should mention Knuckles because I am giving some thought to turning my long hair into dreadlocks…
My first reaction was “No, not a chance, I will not dress up in a silly costume…” but then I started thinking “well, Knuckles is pretty cool though…”
So, yeah, let’s put my name down as a “maybe” with Knuckles as my chosen silly costume!
Cool, Vince can be tails because he’s ginger.
omg….this event looks absolutely “dope”, “tight”, “da bomb” and many other crazy words!
Ive only just found out about this and Super Vs Battle and will certainly be trying to get down to them in the future!
Brilliant idea and long may it continue!
SHORYUKEN!
