EA have announced that the 2 biggest names in MMA outside of the UFC, Fedor Emelianenko & Randy Couture, will headline their upcoming brawler EA Sports MMA. Confirmed to be joining them on the roster will be Jay “The Thoroughbred” Hieron, Gegard Mousasi and Renato Sobral with more to be confirmed as the game draws ever closer. Mr. Couture had this to say on the announcement:-

“I have been a part of MMA for over 10 years and I am excited about the global visibility that a game like EA SPORTS MMA will bring to the sport,” said Randy Couture. “Like my fighting career, I look forward to taking on all comers in EA SPORTS MMA.”

UFC president Dana White has made a very big deal about EA’s entry to the MMA world, claiming that when he went to them 4 years ago to pitch the idea of a UFC game to them they declined the offer and told him MMA was not a real sport, so in reaction to their renewed interest he has told all UFC fighters that if they license their image to EA’s game then they will never fight in the UFC again.

Whilst this is sure to bother hardcore UFC fans, I’m sure fans of MMA in general will love the chance to play using their unsung heroes that fight in the shadow of the UFC and their WWF/WWE style empire, and those people with only a passing interest in MMA probably don’t know who 90% of the fighters in either game are so will settle for the one with the best gameplay, be that EA or THQ.

EA Sports MMA is set for release next year on Xbox 360 and PS3, keep up to date with all the latest announcements for the game on the official website.
