Xbox 360 Gets a Price Cut & Hike in the UK

Author: Vince | Date:

xbox360

The long rumored death of the Xbox 360 Pro in the UK has been confirmed today as Microsoft unveiled a new pricing strategy for the console in the UK market.  The move will see the 60Gb ‘Pro’ package phased out and the 120Gb ‘Elite’ dropping to £199, but the shock part is that the core ‘Arcade’ model will see an increase in price from £130 to £160! The reason behind the increase, exchange rates apparently.  A MS rep told CVG this:-

“We have not made upward adjustments to the trade price of consoles before. A modest increase on the trade price of Xbox 360 Arcade consoles in EMEA allows us to offset exchange rate fluctuations and changes in local market conditions while still offering the most affordable console on the market,”

Shadow Complex In LEGO

Who loves Shadow Complex? Apparently, quite a lot of people, as this epic 2D/3D romp has been a massive success since it released on Xbox Live Arcade. So much of a success, in fact, that Flickr user 2 Much Caffeine created this awesome little homage to the game in LEGO.

We love LEGO here at Team Teabag, and we love explodey shooty games, so this is like heaven for us. In fact, It could only be better if it was made of cake.

Review: Madden NFL 10 (Wii)

Author: Tigervamp | Date:

This should be a much shorter review than the PS3/Xbox 360 version because for one day only I’m trying something new and for this I will cut to the chase and supply you with the main details you’ll need to make your decision on whether or not to purchase this game. I must point out that, unlike with Tiger Woods 10, I haven’t played a recent Madden game in a few years so my opinions are purely based on my experience with this release.

In my review of Tiger Woods 10 for the Nintendo Wii I pointed out that it was much more enjoyable than the version on the PS3 and Xbox 360. What made that game come to life is the use of a recent accessory, which I had my doubts about until testing it out for that review, the Wii-Motion Plus. We all understand how a golf swing works and it’s easy to appreciate, even for those who haven’t played the game before, how a 1:1 motion accuracy would be of great benefit to such a game. We also understand how throwing an (American) Football works and I’m sure most of you will agree that a 1:1 motion accuracy when playing a Madden game on the Wii would at least be a wonderful option to have. I could be wrong in that assumption because the developers of this game clearly weren’t thinking that way when they decided to leave out an option to use the Wii-Motion Plus accessory.

Review: Madden NFL 10 (PS3/Xbox 360)

It is rare that I start a review by mentioning the soundtrack but that’s exactly what I’m going to do here.  The soundtrack in this game is fantastic with each song chosen for its ability to get your adrenaline pumping before that big match.  I can’t say that I dislike a single song in this game and this should come as little surprise because if EA are good at anything it’s putting together a great selection of music.  I can have no complaints when a soundtrack includes Sabotage from Beastie Boys, Paranoid from Black Sabbath, Aces High from Iron Maiden, Blind from Korn, Breed from Nirvana, Duality from Slipknot, Sugar from System of a Down, Walk from Pantera, and Guerilla Radio from Rage Against the Machine.  These songs are fit for any Guitar Hero or Rock Band but one thing I find disappointing is that we are treated to the profanity-free version of Guerilla Radio and this goes as far as removing the world “hell” from the lyrics which I find ridiculous.

Review: G-Force (DS)

Author: Tigervamp | Date:

In this game you play a Guinea Pig super-hero by the name of Darwin who is part of a team of Guinea Pigs and they are out to stop a great evil from doing something it shouldn’t be doing.  Darwin has an electric whip which you must to smash open countless boxes in order to collect what appears to be giant computer chips and these are used to unlock various items during the game.
It’s just my luck that I have to review not one but two videogames, this and GI Joe: Rise of Cobra, which are based on movies I haven’t seen.  There is a chance that GI Joe may have a semi-detailed script but I really doubt that’s the case for G-Force and since I haven’t seen it I can’t comment on how closely this game sticks to events in the movie.  What I can tell you is that the script in this game is pretty dire and while this may not matter to a young child I’m sure parents expert a certain degree of quality from their purchases.
There’s this one guy named Saber who appears to be very surprised any time he asks a simple question, such as “satellite tracking locked in??”.  Now, I don’t know about you but the use of double question marks is an indication of someone feeling shocked and this is best saved for a question along the lines of “my socks are made of jelly??”.  Note: Saber’s socks aren’t made of jelly and that’s a shame because it may have made this game more enjoyable.
This game is filled with dumb lines.  Some kid is sitting in his room and his mother shouts upstairs, to inform the boy that she has prepared him something to eat, and feels the need to tell him that he must wash his bands before he heads downstairs.  Why? It’s not as if he is in the bathroom.  Is that woman’s house so incredibly dirty that people are constantly required to wash their hands before eating anything?
At another point in the game an alarm goes off and Darwin, in his infinite wisdom, says “that’s not wedding bells”.  I guess that statement of fact is included for kids who struggle to tell the difference  between wedding bells and a security alarm.  Having said that, I’m sure that some cynics will suggest that wedding bells should be treated as a sign of impending danger.
At various points in the game the camera is really tight to the back of Darwin and this meant I had to spin round often to discover  items which were directly beside me and this really messed with my motion sickness.  I know that most of you will not be affected by motion sickness but one thing which will affect you is turning round quickly and falling off ledges because you can’t see the edge of the platform even when it’s right next to your feet.  I accept that I have less patience than the average six year old but there’s only so many times you can climb up the same drainpipe before you get really tired of it.
I found both the graphics and sound to be very average in this game but I don’t expect this game to improve much on a beefier system capable of far superior graphics.  It is one of those cases where I can see how a young child might be perfectly content with how this game looks but adults, with a little more videogame experience, are bound to look at this and question the level of effort in the visual department.  This game would no doubt benefit from 2D visuals which I feel is a perfectly acceptable look for a platform game of any generation.
As I haven’t seen the film it is possible that G-Force is the greatest animation to ever grace the big screen but what I can tell you is that the same can’t be said of this videogame adaptation.  The main character looks cute because tiny animals tend to be that way but there is something pretty wrong when I find those TV adverts for the Egg credit card which also feature guinea pigs to be more appealing.  The script is at times laughable, and not in a good way, while the repetitive gameplay will get on your nerves after a short amount of time with the game.
All in all this is a very average platform game which alludes to some sort of huge adventure but it never really gets off the ground.  There are much better platform games on the DS and you should avoid this one unless you, or your child, really loves the film and its main character.
5/10

Review: GI Joe: Rise of Cobra (DS)

Author: Tigervamp | Date:

There are many reviewers out there who will compare this game to Gauntlet and may even describe this as a clone of that game.  I want to shoot that idea down because this game plays more like Mercs, Chaos Engine, and Rambo III than Gauntlet.  I have never been happy with the word “clone” as it suggests a copy which is inferior in some way.  This game is certainly not inferior to Gauntlet and I don’t care if that has classic status because anyone who has played it recently will testify that it’s painfully basic and looks horrible.  Anyone who describes this game as being a Gauntlet clone and then goes on to say that the graphics are poor or the story isn’t very detailed is an absolute moron as the story is non existent in Gauntlet and the graphics are enough to make your cultured eyes bleed.
The graphics are a little fuzzy round the edges and there’s a lack of detail on the backgrounds but I quite like this as for me it has a sort of retro appeal which works well with the type of gameplay this title has to offer.  The music is okay and the sound effects, especially of gunfire, is pretty satisfying.
I haven’t seen the film and have little intention in doing so and because of this I can’t tell if the story here is accurate or not and to be honest with you I really don’t care.  From what I can tell there are two different kinds of people.  There are those who want an adaptation to be accurate to the original, regardless of what format the adaptation is on, and will moan until the end of days about how the spider in LOTR was in the wrong movie.  On the other hand there are those people who love something in one format and accept, and in some cases they may even hope, that an adaptation will be different from the original source.  I fall into the latter group and as long as the core of a story isn’t messed with I just want an adaptation to be enjoyable.  Besides, this is a GI Joe film we’re talking about here, it’s not exactly going to win any awards for best script.
Holding down the fire button while using the D-Pad to control which direction you’re firing in is simple but effective and in this respect it reminds me a lot of Rambo III on the Sega Megadrive.  Thankfully though I found this game to be less stressful than that retro classic as it doesn’t feature many of those panicky moments where you’re asked to run through loads of enemies to escape an area in one piece.
This game won’t last you a long time but having said that there is some replay value in choosing to play as different characters as the experience points you earn with each increases their stats which includes the amount of damage their weapon causes.
GI Joe: Rise of Cobra is a lot of fun and it’s one of those games you can pick up and play for twenty minutes and then put down again until next time.  Sometimes the kind of game I want to play is one which allows me to run around and cause a lot of damage and this is a good example of that.  I recommend this title to anyone who feels like switching off their brain for a few hours and experiencing that “old fashioned” style of run and gun gameplay on their DS.
7/10
