Review: Sam & Max – Season Two: Beyond Time and Space (Xbox 360)

The crime fighting duo are back and doing what they do best. To those who are thinking “fighting crime?” nice try but I’m afraid that answer is incorrect. Sam, the 6ft laid-back Dog, and Max, his short psychopathic Rabbit companion, excel at biting sarcasm above all else. Don’t get me wrong, they do their best and ultimately solve crimes, I’m just saying they’re no threat to the Miss Marples, Poirots, or even Quincys of the world.
The five episodes are Ice Station Santa, Moai Better Blues, Night of the Raving Dead, Chariots of the Dogs, and What’s New Beelzebub? and just as in Season One they’re all to a high standard. That famous jolly heavyweight guy, no not Seth Rogan, has gone a little armed and crazy in Ice Station Santa. To those who remember Tom Hanks in Joe Versus the Volcano it is now time for Sam and Max to step up to the plate in Moai Better Blues. If you’re a fan of Zombie movies, especially Shaun of the Dead, you’re sure to enjoy stopping an undead version of the End of Days in Night of the Raving Dead. In Chariots of the Dogs Bosco has gone missing and the two detectives call on a third, the awesome Flint Paper, for help in finding what happened to the adorable paranoid big guy. Last but by no means least we have Sam and Max facing Santa yet again, no wait…make that Satan, they both love the colour red, in What’s New Beelzebub?
I reviewed Season One on the Wii and the main difference between the two systems is the controllers. I have to say the Wii-Mote is better than using the Xbox 360 controller but there’s not as much of a difference as I was expecting. If there’s been any improvement in the visuals I certainly didn’t notice but it’s not any kind of problem as the graphics were fine on the Wii anyway. The voice acting is once again of a very high standard and plays a vital role in bringing to life the wonderful selection of quirky characters.
As mentioned above there are some great characters in this game and, as far as I’m concerned, the best of the bunch has to be Flint Paper. Happiest with a dame in one arm with the other arm driving his fist into the face of a suspect. I’m a huge fan of the hard-boiled detectives of classic film-noir movies and Flint is the ultimate nod to the famous fictional archetype. As a big fan of Sam & Max Hit the Road it’s great to finally see Flint in action after all these years.
There’s always a concern whenever a sequel to a great game is announced but I needn’t have worried as, apart from the controller, this is every bit as good as Season One. With five great episodes this is fantastic value for money especially considering there’s so many funny comments and descriptions in every location. Fans of Season One should consider this a definite purchase and any fans of Sam & Max Hit the Road who have yet to try either season should get their act together and purchase both!
9/10
