Bungie signs 10 year deal with Activision – How long will the honeymoon last?
Author: Tigervamp | Date: April 29, 2010The headline says it all. Bungie, the developers behind the hugely successful Halo franchise, have signed a 10 year deal with Activision. I find this a very interesting move for a number of reasons.
Moving from Microsoft to Activision will of course mean multi-platform Bungie titles is on the cards. This is good news for any PS3 owners who have secretly been feeling a little jealous. Accepting the fact they couldn’t bounce around the screen while dodging rockets fired at them by a bunch of angry pre-teens must have been very difficult for some. This announcement will certainly add some fuel to the Xbox 360 vs PS3 arguments you find on every single gaming site, and even some sites which have absolutely nothing to do with games. Fun times ahead for any gamers hoping to find a sensible discussion on what is a huge move in the games industry.
That’s the positive, as far as PS3 owners are concerned, but here comes the negative. Fans of the Modern Warfare series were recently dismayed at news of Activision’s reluctance to pay contracted royalties to employees at Infinity Ward after parting ways with the developers. That news shocked me, not just because Activision were acting disgracefully and should have immediately paid what was owed, but also because their working relationship with Infinity Ward had been nothing but a resounding success. I could understand cutting off dead wood but to part ways on such a lucrative partnership seemed a bizarre move.
I suppose this news of a partnership with Bungie provides some explanation as to why Activision were so quick to get rid of Infinity Ward. However, given the less than amicable separation of Activision and Infinity Ward I wonder if Bungie employees would be wise to start saving for a rainy day. You never know what may happen, and it’s possible Activision will get a grip and stop messing around, but their recent actions have put a large question mark over their name. Whatever happens we can expect some interesting times ahead. Time will tell.
This is a bold move and I am sure there are plenty of opinions out there. No matter what you feel like saying, even if it’s just to say “PS3 ownz XBOX!”, the platform is all yours.
