Eurogamer Expo ’09 Announced

Author: Vince | Date: May 7, 2009

eurogamer-expo-09Last years Eurogamer Expo was one of the highlights of the 2008 UK gaming calender with UK fans getting a chance to play blockbuster titles like Fallout 3, Gears of War 2, Mirrors Edge and Little Big Planet months bef0re they were released.  Well it’s back for 2009 and it’s bigger & better than ever!

The expo is to be held over 2 days in 2 venues, on 27th & 28th October at The Royal Armories in Leeds and on the 30th & 31st of October at the Old Billingsgate in London.  The 3 major manufacturers, Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo have all already confirmed their appearance at the show and it’s pretty much a given that ever major developer will be there too if last years show was anything to go by.

Taking place alongside the Expo is the GamesIndustry.biz Career Fair, the UK’s premier recruitment event for the games industry. More activities taking place at the event will be announced soon.

Tickets are on sale now fr the measly price of £6 each per day and can be ordered directly from the events official site.

As promised, here are our highlights from the Eurogamer Expo, a 2-day event happening yesterday and today at The Old Truman Brewery in London. The people we spoke to all agreed that the even had been excellent, with lots of free goodies and the chance to play on lots of this season’s hottest games.

This video features off-screen footage of the following games, in order of appearance:

TTB on Tour: Eurogamer Street Fighter IV Arcade (PC, X360, PS3)

Check this out – the Eurogamer Expo gave us access to some genuine Street Fighter IV arcade cabs, as seen in Japanese arcades at the moment and coming to the rest of the world shortly, and here’s some footage of one of them in action. The game is very fluid and a lot of fun to play, and just like the old Street Fighter games I managed to get myself owned pretty rapidly (this isn’t me playing in the video!).

I wasn’t so sure about the art style of this when it was released, but it’s really growing on me. At least they kept it strictly 2-dimensional in almost every sense of the word.

TTB on Tour: Street Pong, Eurogamer Expo Style

While queueing to get into the Eurogamer Expo today, we witnessed something pretty bizarre. Well, unless you count a bunch of people dressed up as the paddles and “ball” from the old arcade game of Pong to be an everyday occurance. They kept showing up throughtout the day too, and were even seen wandering around the expo floor in their fetching green outfits.

Some people will do anything for money…

TTB on Tour: GTI Club+ at Eurogamer (PS3)

Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure there are absolutely loads of great games coming out for the PS3 at the moment, but as I don’tactually own one I find it hard to really get into the whole thing. But this game really caught my eye at the expo – a remake of the 1996 arcade classic GTI Club, entitled, imaginatively, GTI Club+, which is coming out on the system next month.

The game is a faithful recreation of the handbrake-equipped arcade racer that we know and love from 1996, and I’m pretty sure it’s improved in a few ways, too. Now all we need is a remake of that game where you got to race in the school bus (what was that called?) and I may as well give up in my hunt for unloved retro arcade racing cabs for good.

The game is very twitchy and takes some getting used to, although it’s also very forgiving if you do decide to overcook things going into the bends. The cars bounce around all over the place and are a lot of fun to drive. Loads of fun and really captures the arcadey charm of the original!

Finally, my apologies for the poor quality and the lack of sound in the video – there’ll be a much better version in our Eurogamer Expo wrapup, coming soon!

TTB on Tour: Eurogamer Expo Intro!

Author: Rees | Date:

It’s been so mad here at the Eurogamer Expo that we’ve only just gotten around to actually writing about anything… Today we’ve discovered that Activision really don’t want anyone filming Call of Duty: World at War, that Shaun White Snowboarding is really incredibly awesome with the Wii balance board, and that I really, really suck at Mirror’s Edge.

There’s also a big Far Cry 2 tournament, a rather cool outdoor area with a Motorstorm: Pacific Rift shack, a tank, and a crazy guy giving away tasty fruit juice, and of course a shedload of Xbox 360s, PS3s, Wiis, DSs, and very nice specced PCs showing off all the latest and greatest that the games industry that we love so much has decided to bestow upon us.

But enough from me, I think the pictures should speak for themselves, so here are some of the highlights of this morning…
