That’s right folks, Gamerscore Blog has announced that Portal: Still Alive will be releasing next Wednesday (October 22nd) on Xbox Live Arcade. It’s going to be 1200 and will include the full original game, as well as an additional 14 challenge maps and 6 “advanced” maps.
Yep… Super 3D Portals 6 is the 2D remake to end all 2D remakes. It’s Portal for the ole’ Atari 2600 VCS. It features 4 whole levels of fun, and I have to say that the graphics are actually quite good for a 2600 game. In a really clever twist, it uses two joystick for control, with one used for movement and the other to aim the portal gun.
You can download it and play it for yourself on Stella, if if you’re really posh you can load it up onto a 2600 flash cart and try it out on the actual 1970’s wooden beauty itself.
Check out this awesome video of EA’s E3 Mirror’s Edge demo recreated in Portal. It was done by an intrepid an modder known as EvilWeevil, and it actually works really, really well as a Portal level. Well done that man (or woman).
Turns out that the extra test chambers included with the upcoming XBLA release Portal: Still Alive are actually the Flash maps we reported on a while back, Valves’s Doug Lombardi has explained.
For the uninitiated, Portal: The Flash Version is a free 2D flash implementation of Portal, and the game’s 2D environments were recently recreated for the real, 3D, version of the game. The trouble is that on the PC, they’re completely free, but the only way to get them on the 360 (or so it seems) is to pay to download them, along with a game that I already paid for once as part of The Orange Box.
Also, to add insult to injury, it seems we won’t even be getting all of the extra levels that our PC brethren have been enjoying.
It seems like Portal: Still Alive, which was announced as an Xbox 360 exclusive at E3, is actually just a re-release of the original game with a few extra bits and bobs thrown in. The reason?
“It’s just a series of new challenges … another way for people to experience Portal, without having to buy the full Orange Box.”
Says Valve’s Doug Lambardi. Sounds like a pretty good reason to me, and even if there are only 10 extra levels I’ll be buying it anyway, despite the fact that I’ve completed the game more than once already. Any extra content would be a bonus, and it’s a good excuse to have another playthrough of one of the best games ever made.
They’ve also announced that the new challenges won’t have any GLaDOS voiceover however, and won’t be jammed into the original storyline as they don’t want to mess it up. In an unrelated note he added, interestingly, that they’re still committed to the 360, and still indifferent to the Wii and PS3. I guess that means no PSN / VC release, then.
Finally, there’s some interesting news on the TF2 DLC and achievements that have been popping up on the PC version. As we predicted back in May, the achievements will be making their way to the 360, and it was hinted at that they’ll be bundled with the new map too.
Rather than leaving you to hunt all of these little buggers down on Youtube or GameTrailers, I have saved you the effort and collated most of yesterdays trailers from E3.
Fallout 3 (360/PC/PS3)
First up we have Fallout 3 from Bethseda Softworks. After buying the rights to the series a while back they appear to have served us up a post-apocolyptic Oblivion, which is looking remarkably slick. For a better view of the gameplay take a look at the live demo from E3 yesterday on Gametrailers. It was also announced that there will be exclusive DLC for the Xbox version of Fallout 3.
Yup, GLaDOS is back and only on the Xbox 360! Portal: Still Alive has just been announced as a XBLA title coming this fall. Following a lovely introduction from the lady GLaDOS herself, we were teased by the promise of new test chambers and achievements, and that was about it…
I’m sure we’ll hear plenty about this in the coming weeks!
[Update] So more details on Still Alive have surfaced, and it seems that the game will be the full version of Portal from The Orange Box with some additional levels (the flash game map pack?) and some new game modes.
Not content with being misled by the sarcastic and sadistic GlaDOS all the way through Valve’s FPP (first-person puzzler) Portal, a very clever chap called Ryan van Middlesworth has now come up with a patch that will allow you to use GlaDOS’s soothing tones as the voice for you sat-nav, with a bit of software called GLaGPS.
Before you all rush to download the software from here, it’s worth noting that this will only work with the Garmin Nuvi for now, so all you TomTom owners will need to wait or buy a new sat-nav.
I’m just waiting for the first report of it telling somebody to turn right and them ending up in a giant pit of fire…
It’s pretty much a given that almost every DS owner out there owns a piracy homebrew cart by now, and here’s something you can go and stick on it – the Flash Portal inspired StillAliveDS. It’s a Portal-infused platformer that brings a 2D adaptation of Valve’s massive hit game to Nintendo’s lovely little pocket console, and makes great use of the touchscreen for portal-firing skillz.
The game also features actual, collectible cake, the ability to download new levels using the DS’s wi-fi connection, and even a Java level editor so that you can create your own. Not only that, but as with all great homebrew, this game is completely free of charge. So go download it now.
Today I submit for your approval this piece of Portal inspired fan art. The picture did not start life as as a homage to this great video game though, check out the original on the Russian equivalent of Flickr here (NSFW) from photographer/artist Max Sauco.
